Chapter 2
I couldn’t see Robbie anywhere so I left. When I
opened the school gate, I was attacked by a couple. They screamed.
“I’m not a zombie! I’m alive! Please don’t kill me!” I
pleaded. They got off me and gave me a quick glance. “Oh, sorry. We get quite
paranoid. Where are you heading?” They
asked. I took a minute to see who they were. There was a middle aged man, maybe
35? He had short, black hair and he was
wearing a mucky, flannel shirt with jeans. And there was a woman, also middle
aged. I think they were a couple. She had a ponytail of long brown hair and she
was wearing leggings and a graphic t-shirt.
“I don’t know. I’m looking for my son” I replied.
“Well, you can come with us. We’re heading south. All
the kids are being taken down south.”
“Oh, thank you, so much for telling me!”
“It's fine, we
have a car so we can go quickly. What’s your name?” They asked.
“I’m Iris, how about you guys?”
“I’m Jack and that’s Zoe.”
“Nice to meet you! Anyway, let’s go,” said Zoe. We
started to walk to the car when a man
jumped out of nowhere. Jack grabbed an axe
from his back and hacked him in the stomach. I was taken aback that he was so
experienced in killing. “Um... How did
you do...? Never mind.” We got in the car and drove for an hour.
“So, where were you guys before this?” I asked.
“We were picking up Precious. But then a teacher said
all children were being sent south. How about you?”
“Just at home, waiting for Robbie to come home.
Nothing interesting. I was knitting but then I got a call from Robbie. He was
really scared. I hope he’s being brave. He usually is.” I began to weep. Zoe
put her hand on my back and said
“We all hope they’re being brave, honey. And they
probably are.”
Then the car spluttered to a stop. “We’ve run out of
gas!” He said, huffing under his breath.
“There should be a gas station nearby, hopefully,”
said Zoe. I took a gulp from my bottle and evaluated the situation. I only had
3 chocolate bars, 2 apples, 2 bottles of water, 1 pencil and notebook and a
knife. No gas.
“I guess we’ll have to walk. We’ll figure it out!” I
said, trying to be optimistic. Though all I was thinking about was finding
Robbie.
We started trekking across the forest; a knife in
hand, an axe in Jack’s and a bottle in
Zoe’s. The knife was shaking in my sweaty hand. Every other minute, someone
would turn to look for a zombie. “So, Iris, what was your life like before
this?” Jack asked.
“Um... Well, I have one son, Robbie. He’s 10 years
old. He’s my world. Everything I work for is for him; because of him. I work as
a waitress in a bar. Unfortunately, I’m not treated very well, at all. But I
want Robbie to have the best education. I hope I can find him.” I said, my eyes
tearing up. Zoe patted me on the back, giving me a smile.
“It’s alright. We have a daughter called Precious.
About the same age as Robbie. We’re going to get her now. Aren’t we, dear?”
“Yes. Maybe they’ve met! That would be great!”
“What did you guys do before this?” I asked.
“I am a lawyer and Zoe’s a doctor. We earned a lot of
money too. We both love our jobs. We look forward to getting back to them after
all this ends. Do you have any foo...?” He replied, before being cut off in
horror. There stood a shadowed figure. He had a limp on his right leg. His face
had a bloody gash in it. He was bruised and beaten. He fell to the ground.
“Help me! Please!” He said, quietly and hoarsely.
“Oh my goodness! Get help!”
“Oh my goodness! Get help!”
“Please...” His voice drifted.
“No, wait!” She
knelt down and put her fingers to his neck. “He’s dead!” She sat and cried. Her
head buried deep in her hands.
“He never got to live his life! He looks only 20 years
old!” He suddenly sat up and began to chew on Zoe’s neck. “Zoe!” Jack yelled,
he then dug his axe into the zombie’s
head. It was too late. She was badly hurt. She could hardly walk as the gash on
her neck was so large.
“We can deal with this. We can do this.” Jack said, trying to reassure himself.
“Jack, I think we need to leave her. She’s unconscious. I don’t think she’ll wake up.”
“No, we’re going to take her.” He
said, determinedly.
“Jack,” I said calmly and I put my
hand on his arm. He pulled away and shouted “No! We need to take her. We just
need to wake her up!” He shook her gently, saying “Wake up, Babe. Come on!
Please. Just wake up. Precious needs us.” He stopped shaking her and sat
whispering “We can fix this, we can fix this.”
“Come on, we have to go.” He suddenly
stood up and yelled “Stupid!” and he kicked the dead man, hard. He then picked
up Zoe and said “She’ll wake up, I know she will.”
We began to walk through the forest again. Jack
slumped over while walking. He looked very tired.
“Jack, we have
to leave her. She isn’t going to wake up. You’re obviously tired.”
“No! I’ll do anything for her. She will wake up!” He yelled; tears falling
with every step. I slowed down and walked beside him. He looked at me and
stopped.
“She didn’t deserve this, Iris! Why did this have to
happen?” He sobbed.
“I don’t know why this happened,”
I said, calmly. I saw a hut in the distance. “Come on, let’s go there.” We went
into the hut. I dropped my bag and sat on the floor. I laid my head down. Jack
gently placed Zoe in the corner and copied what I did, next to her. He stroked
her face and smiled.
“Goodnight, Jack.”
“Goodnight.”
I heard him whisper, “Goodnight, Zoe.”
