Chapter 1
I never thought I would get this way. You would think
that with all the bad influences that I would hate to even think about being
like that. But everything’s changed; unfortunately, for some people.
“Robbie, come get your breakfast!” I yelled from the
kitchen. In he came, running at full force. The smell of a cheap perfume, I had
bought, lingered around him. It smelled of roses.
“Are you wearing my perfume?” I asked, chuckling.
“I just want to smell nice for Alicia. I’m gonna ask
her out today.”
“Okay, but today we’ll go buy you some of your own
‘perfume’. But good idea. Hope it goes well!”
“Thanks! Wow; waffles! Thanks, Mum. You’re the best!” He said, grinning. He plopped down on a dining room chair and started to attack his breakfast; stuffing the food in forkful by forkful.
“Thanks! Wow; waffles! Thanks, Mum. You’re the best!” He said, grinning. He plopped down on a dining room chair and started to attack his breakfast; stuffing the food in forkful by forkful.
“Hurry up! You’re gonna be late for school!” He
devoured the last bite and shuffled to get his bag. He grabbed his homework and
shoved it in, then cuddled me in a warm embrace and left. “Bye Mum! Love you!”
2006, 19th July; the day he came into my
life. Being a parent makes you appreciate life a lot more. It makes you feel
immortal. I took him home and placed him in his crib. That night I didn’t sleep,
I was too busy watching him sleep in
case he stopped breathing. His father had left because he didn’t want a child.
We were abandoned without the help of anyone. Robbie needed two parents but he
only had me. I had always wondered what would have happened when Robbie moved
out. Everyone always said that I was too good to him. I had had an awful
childhood so I wanted to give Robbie all my love. And it was always returned. I
was definitely going to help him with moving out. At least we were always
together. We had all the time in the world. That’s what I thought.
I was watching the news when an urgent message emerged
from the T.V. It said “Everyone stay inside, do not, repeat, do not go
outside.” Robbie was still at school. It said to make a safety bag including a
knife, food, water, a torch and other things. I gathered the necessities and
put them next to the door. Then I got a phone call.
“Mum?”
“Robbie! What’s wrong?”
“There’s a man outside who’s twitching and bloody.”
“Oh. Honey, Stay inside. Oka...” I was cut off by
screaming. I heard Robbie panting, heavily.
“Mummy! He’s inside. He’s eating Mrs Poter!” He only ever called me Mummy when
he was frightened. Then the phone hung up.
“Robbie? Robbie!” I dropped the phone in shock. I needed to know what was happening and
where he was. I picked up the bag, put it on my back and left, slamming the
door behind me.
Our street no longer looked like our street. It was
destroyed. With a knife in my hand, I walked down the road. I heard groaning
behind me. I turned to see a deformed, bloody man about ten feet away from me.
I panicked. This is what Robbie was talking about.
When I got to the school, it was a mess. Many bodies lying on the floor; so many bodies. Then
someone grabbed my ankle. I screamed. “Please. Help me. Please,” someone said.
They were badly hurt, it was Mrs Poter. I
dragged her out of the heap of corpses. She then said “Please, kill me. I don’t
want to live in this world.”
I was hesitant to kill her, as anyone should be. We
had been best friends since Year 9 in high school. Ellen was always a great
teacher to Robbie. “I don’t want to! Please, we can do this together!” I said,
emotionally.
“Just do it! Do it!” She yelled. I dug the knife deep
into her chest and once into her skull. I’ll never forget how awful it felt to
kill someone, especially your best friend.
I remembered where Robbie’s class was because of Parent’s
Evening. I got to the class and it was mortifying. Alicia was dead on the
floor, a bite on her neck. I’m glad he wasn’t there; he would have been
devastated.
